How It Works: The DIY Flower Box

What you get in your DIY box:

With each DIY box, you will receive the following:

  1. A surprise selection of flowers, curated by our professional florists.
  2. Half a block of flower foam, to use in vase arrangements where you want to stabilize each stem in place.
  3. Flower wire and twine rope in a pouch, to tie your stems together for hand or vase bouquets.
  4. A sachet of flower food, to condition your flowers and keep them lasting longer.

First things first:

Prepare a pair of sharp scissors or shears ,  a vase of your choice, and a bucket along with the items in the box.

When you receive your box, it is important to immediately unbox the flowers and follow these steps to keep them fresh:

  • Fill the bucket with lukewarm water.
  • Take out the sachet of flower food, which you will find kept in place with a sticker on the inner walls of your box, and mix it into the water.
  • Gently remove the blooms from the box, diagonally trim the ends of the stems, and place them in the water, making sure to leave them in there for at least 2 hours before you start arranging them.
  • You can re-use the water later in your vase for when you start creating your arrangement, or if you're going to use the floral foam, you can soak the foam in this water as well (as explained in the sections below)

Creating your arrangement:

Technique 1: Straight into the vase

You can simply arrange your flowers directly into the vase (or split into multiple vases!). Take each stem and diagonally trim it to the appropriate length depending on your choice of vase, then keep playing around with the placement of the blooms until you're satisfied! Tip: Your stems don't have to all be the same length, play around with the height of the flowers to create a more dynamic look.

Technique 2: Hand bouquet

Use the flower wire and twine rope to create a bouquet in your hand then tie it together before placing it into the vase or wrapping it up to gift your loved one. Doing this helps you keep your arrangement in place and makes it easier for you when you need to change the water and clean the vase.

To tie together your bouquet, simply take some of the wire and tightly wrap it around the stems a few times where your hand was holding them together, then twist the ends of the wires together before cutting off any excess. You can do the same with the twine rope or use it as an aesthetic touch by tying a bow around your stems and covering the wires.

Technique 3: Using the flower foam

Flower foam is a great tool to use in arranging flowers in a vase, as it gives you the freedom to stabilize your flowers in the exact spot that you want, allowing you to get creative with your floral designs.

Place the foam in water, without pushing it in, and allow it to naturally soak up the water for a few minutes. If your foam does not fit into your vase, then soak the foam in the bucket before cutting it to the desired size, based on your choice of vase.

After making sure your foam is stable within your vase, you can begin arranging your flowers by inserting the stems about 1.5 inches (about 4cm) into foam.

Caring for your flowers:

For straight into the vase arrangements, make sure you are changing the water, trimming your stems, and cleaning your vase every 2 days.

For foam arrangements, just remember to water the foam every 2 days. You can do this by using anything with a spout to make it easier to reach and find a spot somewhere in the middle of the foam to pour the water.

And finally, don't forget to get creative and enjoy the process!
